Omuthiya Culture Centre Phase 1 and 2, which comprised the construction of a library, a museum and administrative offices, was conceived of as the first stages in the establishment of a holistic culture Centre for the newly established town of Omuthiya. An industrial aesthetic was decided upon very early in the design process in order to mitigate cost constraints, and the low maintenance requirements of the location.
The use of bold colours, together with the bold expression of structural elements of the building and a thick, punctuated curvilinear exhibition wall at the museum, creates a clear and informal legibility for the Centre as a whole. The current and future buildings comprising the culture centre will be interspersed with courtyards that doubles up as creative, functional or recreational spaces and expands the use of enclosed spaces in a flexible manner.
The future phases of the Centre will incorporate an Amphitheatre, a Craft Centre and a Multi- purpose Hall.
